About Greenleaf Cemetery

Greenleaf Cemetery was established in 1868 when Greenleaf Fisk gave five acres to the town for a burial place. Additional land was later donated by the Pecan Valley IOOF Lodge and the Brownwood Masonic Lodge, creating a ten acre burial ground.

Through four subsequent additions, the cemetery has grown to accommodate more than 18,000 burials. A special section was set aside in 1958 for members of the Catholic denomination.

The Brownwood Garden Club built the present entrance, and during the 1918 flu epidemic, the cemetery averaged about four burials daily, requiring four crews working around the clock.

Today, Greenleaf Cemetery continues to operate as a nonprofit perpetual care cemetery, governed by a five member board elected by the Greenleaf Cemetery Association. It remains a peaceful resting place for local families and an important part of Brownwood’s history.

Our Rich History

Greenleaf Cemetery holds significant historical importance for Brown County. Originally known as Round Mountain, it was later renamed Greenleaf and has served as a resting place for generations of area residents.

The cemetery honors more than 390 Confederate veterans buried in Brown County, with over 175 interred at Greenleaf. A Confederate memorial dedicated in 2003 by Gen. Horace McCulloch Camp 1862 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Brownwood citizens recognizes their role in the area’s early growth.

Among the thousands buried here are community leaders and notable Texans, including Greenleaf Fisk, known as the “Father of Brownwood,” Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian, Dr. Mollie Armstrong, the first woman optometrist in Texas, and former lieutenant governor Will E. Mayes.

As you walk through the cemetery, you will find markers telling the stories of early settlers, community leaders, and families who shaped Brownwood’s history.
